[…] Today, we’ll talk about Harry Styles, his own PR narrative, and the big “what the fuck” that is this fandom. Honestly, I know I started this post with a very calm tone, but I’ve been dying to rant about One Direction’s fans and their attitude towards Harry, so you might as well brace youself, fasten your seatbelt, and enjoy the turbulent ride as I vent on full force. I swear it’ll be short.
Yesterday, I stumbled on a post af an Italian Larry Stylinson fan page—which, apart from Larry updates, also reports rumors and news on a daily basis—about Harry allegedly spending the night in company of two men and two women. What was really baffling, though, was not the update, but the comments right below it. We are in a fan page about Harry and Louis’ committed relationship; it would be safe to assume that fans would shrug it off. Well, they didn’t. All the comments but one or two, and I’m not even exaggerating because I checked, were along the lines of “I hope he doesn’t fuck up as he’s already done multiple times, because Louis doesn’t deserve to get hurt,” “Poor Louis,” “He’s fucking up already,” and a cringeworthy “Well, I know Louis was in a nightclub last night, but it’s different with Harry,” implying that, wheareas Louis is reliable, for some reason Harry is not.
It’s baffling, really, and I don’t know what’s more both sad and frustrating – that they don’t understand that almost anything that gets to the public is planned and staged and that there is no way that the management isn’t somewhat involved in Harry’s public appereances, or that they’re buying a PR narrative that has more holes than Swiss cheese. Unconsciously or not, they genuinely think of Harry as someone who’s ready to fuck anything that moves. He cannot even hang out with his own friends, he can’t even have friends, God forbid, because he must be fucking each one of them.
Wait, weren’t we on a Larry Stylinson fan page? Weren’t we surrounded but thousands of active supporters of their relationship? Shouldn’t Harry be in a committed relationship? Shouldn’t we be in a Facebook page where no one thinks he’s straight? Oh, but it doesn’t matter, because Harry is a manwhore, a slut, isn’t he? He can’t keep it in his pants, he’s so cheap. He’s hanging out with two men and two women! TWO MEN! TWO WOMEN! ALL AT ONCE! He’s obviously going to fuck them all, because he’s Harry, so he’s a slut. Louis can go to a nightclub because he’s Louis, he’s the one who must cry himself to sleep every night over Harry’s disgusting behaviour and attitude.
I wonder how they cannot see how deeply unjust and frankly hurtful what they’re doing is—reinforcing a media image built on a pile of lies and constructions. It doesn’t matter what he does, he doesn’t matter that he’s a guy who has written songs about true love and fighting for it one no matter what, that he has his love permanently inked on his body with matching tattos, that he has denied his womanizer rumors whenever possible, that obviously loathes these rumors, that he has had at least three obvious beards and, when he was captured kissing a girl, which happened twice, it was obviously staged. It doesn’t matter, because he’s a manslut. Because he goes after anything that moves, because tabloids said so, because all those things don’t count as long as you are fed with his public image as a womanizer—a public image that doesn’t even remotely fit with the way he speaks and acts.
I MIGHT see why would non-larry supporters buy this bullshit, but all these people convinced that he’s non-straight and still believing that he’s a dick who doesn’t have any respect for women (and for Louis) leave me negatively speechless. Their attitude makes me immensely sad, as it proves that people will always blindly buy, regardless of what is in front of their eyes (and, in this case, it’s a genuine, kind, gorgeous human being), what newspapers and tabloids sell to the public.
You call yourself a fan, you’re ready to defend him and the band againtt the “haters” when, really, you’re throwing more shit at them – at him – than any hater would ever do. You claim to be a fan, and then you’re ready to bring him down and blame him for everything—for, literally, having friends. You don’t see how fucked that his? That you’re part of the problem?
If you’re one of these people, I urge you to reconsider your attitude as a fan, because you’re failing him: you’re failing to support him and you’re failing at being a person with at least some sort of common and critical sense. You’re buying a PR narrative and you’re actively reinforcing it every day. Even if you think that he’s straight, I still can’t believe you’re willing to think so little of him. This fandom, and I’m saying it as someone who’s watching from the outside, is fucked up on too many levels. This is one of them.
Either sort yourself out or accept the fact that the one being a dick, here, is not Harry Styles; it’s you."
